Steve's Alan Gettle, Jim Black and Steve father Stanley built large white barns that housed 80 horses. Built in 1950, the year Steve was born, the Skyline Ranch had a roping arena, restaurant, tack rooms, wash racks, indoor riding ring, club room, blacksmith shop, saddlemaker shop, calf roping Steve on Oakland A's Mascot Charlie Oand bucking chutes. In the early 1970's, the most famous resident of Skyline Ranch was the mule Charlie O, mascot of the Oakland A's baseball team. Steve paraded Charlie O around every home game.
